Ruby Bailey’s 𝘛𝘺𝘱𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘏𝘦𝘳𝘦 materializes what 0nty, editor and co-author of "Dialogues on CoreCore and the Contemporary Online Avant-Garde", defines as Web Expressionism — a mode of internet-native art that centers not on depicting the web, but on expressing the emotional saturation of being shaped by it. The piece features a laser-cut steel panel paired with a set of reconfigurable vinyl magnets, each printed with fragments of Bailey’s image archive and digital detritus: sims figures, interface echoes, pixelated nature, selfie residues.

The piece invites tactile reconfiguration. Viewers are able to shift fragments across the cold industrial plane of the steel. With each arrangement, new variations of meaning emerge and dissolve — echoing Bailey’s broader interest in the unstable hover-state between online visibility and withdrawal.

For 0nty, Web Expressionism foregrounds how the online subject feels as they are contoured by platform infrastructures — “an atmosphere of affective currents run through with a mix of oceanic love-maxxing effervescence and numbed, hyper-violent alienation.” In Bailey’s work, this condition is mapped onto physical form. The steel reads as infrastructure — brutal, immovable, serverlike. But the magnets are soft analogue systems, looping data-feelings — mobile fragments of identity and suggestion, endlessly rearranged by touch.

Bailey’s avatar L00bi — the central figure of Loobtopia and Endlessity — finds here a kind of exploded anatomy: disintegrated into signage, filters, glitch-phrases. The titular command, 𝘛𝘺𝘱𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘏𝘦𝘳𝘦, is both absurd and intimate, recalling the hollowed-out UX languages we’ve internalized.

A prompt for self-performance, a semiotic haunt.

There is no final image. This is "a sharp edge on which the affective experience of the online cuts itself on infrastructural matter, as a surface which ‘tears’ the fabric of L00bi’s imaginary avatar,” while remaining light, cool
and aloof
